The
Osprey viewpoint at Dodd Wood is now open between
10am and 5pm when project staff will be present with telescopes available
for public use.
A
live video link facility available at Whinlatter is also open, initially
in a portakabin until mid May when the redeveloped visitor centre will
be reopened.

Dodd
wood is located 3 miles north of Keswick on the A591. Whinlatter Visitor
Centre is located west of Braithwaite on the B5292.
The
Dodd viewpoint offers magnificent views over Bassenthwaite lake, a favoured
fishing area for the Ospreys and there is a clear direct view of the
nest from a safe distance. It is situated about 3 miles north of Keswick
off the A591 - follow signposts to the Mirehouse from the A66. The viewpoint
is 10 minutes walk uphill from the Mirehouse car park.
We
would ask visitors not to try and view the Ospreys from laybys on the
A66 due to road safety concerns, the shore of Bassenthwaite Lake which
is a sensitive area for conservation and is designated a National Nature
Reserve or to approach the nest.

Forestry Commission's Dodd Wood. Enthusiastic and knowledgeable staff
will be on hand from 10am until 5pm seven days
a week (May
until the end of August)
to help you with your questions.

The Old Sawmill Tearoom at Dodd Wood offers an appetising selection
of home baking, snacks, ice creams etc. and is open throughout the Osprey
season. Mirehouse, home of the Friar-Speddings and the gardens are open
to the public for a reasonable charge. The Forestry Commission provide
a network of forest walks starting from the car park through some huge
Douglas Fir and there are stunning 360 degree views from the top of
the Dodd. There are also access routes onto Skiddaw. Ask for a leaflet
at the Tearoom. There are public toilets at the car park.

Dodd
Wood Car park is served by a good bus service from Keswick and Workington
directions. Buses are X4, 555 and 73 (from 21 July to 3 September annually)
Car parking
is available at the Cafe and costs £1.50 per car for the day.
No coach parking available - please disembark passengers on main road
and park offsite.
Access
to and use of the telescopes is free.

Car
parking is available at Whinlatter Visitor Centre and costs £2.00
for 4 hours or £3.00 for over 4 hours. An annual car park pass
is available for £10.00 which covers parking at Whinlatter, Grizedale
and Dodd.
At Dodd Wood car parking costs £2 per car .There
is no charge to view the live video or use the telescopes.
