Welcome to our Good Needle Guide which is designed to help you choose the right Christmas Tree and keep it in the best of health into the New Year .
Here are a few quick tips for a healthy Christmas tree.
  • Before taking the tree indoors, cut the bottom 2.5cm (1 inch) off the stem
  • Give the tree a good shake outside before taking it indoors
  • Keep your tree in a water holding stand, top it up daily.
  • Stand your tree away from sources of heat.

Remember the warm dry conditions found in modern houses are not kind to Christmas trees and even a well cared for tree will drop some needles. This guide indicates needle drop for a properly cared for tree, kept inside for 3 weeks and is expressed in handfulls of needles for each variety of tree
     
Lodgepole pine has long, thin needles and differs from Scots pine in that Lodgepole is heavier branched and the branches grow up more vertically. Many of our trees have cones on which add to the attraction of this cheerful green tree. Needle retention is very good
 
 
Norway spruce is the "original" Christmas tree and for many people the only true Christmas tree. The Norway is a beautiful tree with rich, mid green foliage, fine needles and a conical structure. Needle retention is not as good as pines or firs but can be improved by regular watering and locating away from sources of heat. Large Norway make wonderful outdoor trees.

A Blue spruce is a very different tree from the other spruce that we sell. It has a unique blue colour with a very distinctive aroma but very prickly and is therefore not a very good tree if you have young children. An excellent tree which has very good needle retention. The needles are very glossy and have a silver sheen to their underneath. The needles are soft and broad giving the tree a distinctly different shape to that of spruce or pine. An ideal tree for decorating .
